Temporary

Week 2 of kitchen renovation!

We have a make-shift kitchen in our family room. We are using utility sink in the laundry room. It is all OK - I am getting used to it. Also, I keep telling myself - this is temporary.

Some of the pain is totally self-inflicted - we could definitely go more with paper plates and disposable utensils. We could eat out more. I think I'll feel a little happier (and calmer) if I organize things a bit better... Now that I have a sense of how we are using the space and what's becoming an annoyance (limited space for food prep/cutting up things, lack of good places to conveniently store bread and produce) - I can definitely rearrange stuff to make life easier.

I miss having an oven and a dishwasher. I miss having everything in its place and easy to access. I miss knowing where things are. I miss having a (relatively) uncluttered family room. Ugh, this is why we waited more than 10 years to do this.

Temporary! This is all temporary! Even if the work takes longer than expected, eventually this will be over and we will be able to use our kitchen again!

I wonder how much of my self-pitying mood is directly related to the recent time change... I feel like a herd of elephants have walked all over me. I don't know how this shift just an 1 hour forward completely throws me off balance.

  1. I am in such a MOOOOOOD since time change. AND- I went on birth control for my hot flashes and night sweats but it made me so tired. Nope, not gonna do it. I need my energy. Especially when I'm teaching or parenting. Heck, anything. We have a kitchen reno this spring and I am dreading it.

    1. Ugh, sorry to hear that - I am with you, being tired is the worst.

How extensive of a kitchen project are you doing? We are in week 2 - it's inconvenient but definitely survivable (will see how I feel in another 2 weeks...). We are not knocking down any walls, though - just replacing cabinets, floor, and countertops, and moving around some of the appliances.

  2. Oh man, we are contemplating doing a kitchen renovation and I really appreciate your blogging about it because it's reminding me how hard it will be. Good luck!

also time changes are the worst. I feel it takes at least a week to recover, if not more. Good luck!

    1. Thanks Rachel!!!

Yeah, we waited 10 years to do the kitchen... and would have probably dragged our feet for another 10 if it wasn't for a (luckily minor and caught in time) water leak that caused vinyl to start peeling off the floor...
