August Feelings

We have a few more weeks before school starts! There are no more camps for kids. I have mixed feelings about end-of-summer. On one hand, I'm really looking forward to:

  • having a very quiet house while I'm working...
  • and not finding the kitchen a complete disaster zone every time I come down to get a glass of water.
  • and not finding a gazillion dirty bowls, cups, and utensils all over the place.
  • and not having kids complain about their chores
  • and not having to constantly tell kids to get off the screens and go finish their chores
  • and oh, my, not having constantly hungry children complaining that there is not enough food (there is tons of food! just not junk food!)
At the same time, I want to make sure to Make The Most Of the Summer!
  • Go on family bike ride
  • Go to the park
  • Go kayaking
  • Take the kids to the library and let them browse or wonder around town while I work
  • Have leisurely breakfasts with the family
  • Play board games
In the meantime, work is hellishly stressful and I barely have time to breath. I feel exhausted - can barely function after 7 pm. Something is leaking near our freezer, pushing up the kitchen floor tiles (we just noticed that today... but our ice maker in the freezer has been acting weird for months now so we think that's the culprit). The house is messy and dusty. So, major anxiety all around.

Deep breaths....

Dear Reader, how is your end-of-summer going? What is the source of calm and what is the source of anxiety?

  1. Natasha, I can so relate to having no food bullet point!! It made me chuckle. Back in my day, bread, some mayo on top, some scallions/onions- thank you and have a nice day. But THESE KIDS (my kids) don't know how good they have it.
how is your end-of-summer going? We just came back from Italy two days ago and it's going well. The three of us are jet-lagged and are up at 4AM which I don't mind, I've been meaning to get back to my morning routine anyway. My motto for the rest of August is "get ready and enjoy" In other words, get ready for the school year (whatever I can do digitally, I will do digitally), and enjoy stands for family activities like beach and hiking while we still have time.

Source of calm: yoga and meditation; calendar, intentions. My garden.
Source of anxiety: back to school. I am determined to buy less carp for the kids, we will shop our house first.

    1. Hi Daria,

Your Italy trip looks amazing - reading about it made me feel like I was (a little bit) there. It looks like you had a great balance of adventurous stuff and relaxation. And the food - oh, it all sounds so good!

I am determined to enjoy the last few weeks of summer (hiking and beach sounds amazing!) - but I do need to figure out who needs what for the new school year... We went shopping for supplies last weekend with my youngest (I think we have everything for her except for an orange folder - the school was weirdly specific about the folder colors ...). It seems like everyone needs shoes. There will probably be a gazillion things that the kids will suddenly remember they need the day before school starts!

      I should try meditation...

    2. I took all of the uniforms out from last year and made sure they fit. They do for L, not for R. Yesterday, I brought him to the store, fur pants, four shirts, and now he is all set. It's easier when they are still little because he honestly still could care less what he wears.
